What machine loads roof tile onto a roof?
MMJ loads roof tile with a telehandler that lifts it from the truck to the roof deck. All six published MMJ loading jobs used one. Here is how the job runs.

The short answer
On MMJ jobs the machine is a telehandler: a lift with a telescoping boom that raises tile from the truck or ground staging to the roof deck, where the crew spreads it. All six projects MMJ has published used one. Crane-assisted handling is reviewed when a property needs it, and sections the boom cannot reach are hand-carried.
Which machines can put roof tile on a roof?
Three methods get tile from the ground to the deck on a Florida job. A telehandler does the lifting on every rooftop loading MMJ has published, and the other two cover what the boom cannot reach.
| Method | How the tile goes up | When MMJ uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Telehandler | A telescoping boom lifts tile from the truck or ground staging to the roof edge, where the crew takes it and spreads it | Every published MMJ loading job: 6 of 6 |
| Crane | A crane lifts loads where the boom cannot reach or the building is too tall | Reviewed when crane-assisted handling is part of the plan, with availability, responsibilities and timing agreed first |
| Hand-carry | Workers carry tile up ladders or across roof sections by hand | Sections the machine cannot reach, such as a disconnected rear roof in West Palm Beach |
Truck-mounted conveyors and boom trucks are also used in the trade. MMJ's published jobs all used a telehandler. Searches for a roof tile loading machine company also return factory equipment makers that load tile into kilns at the plant; this page covers the jobsite side, from the delivery truck to the roof.
How does rooftop tile loading work, step by step?
- Review the site: the entrance or gate, driveway edges, swales and culverts, overhead lines and trees, the setup ground, and the roof-ready confirmation.
- Protect the approach: plywood goes down along the equipment path over pavers or a finished driveway.
- Stage the pallets at the street or driveway for the ground-to-roof handoff.
- Lift: the telehandler raises each load to the prepared roof. On a steep roof, lift timing is matched to the crew receiving it.
- Spread the load: field, trim and ridge pieces are split into bundles and working rows across the roof planes, around valleys, vents and ridges.
- Hand off: the tile is staged in the contractor's placement zones and the installation crew takes over.

What did the telehandler do on MMJ's published jobs?
Each job below combined plant pickup, jobsite delivery and rooftop loading, and each lists a telehandler as the loading equipment.
| Route | Tile | What the loading involved |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Wales to Boca Raton | Barcelona 900 | Field and trim bundles placed across several roof planes and around roof features |
| Okeechobee to West Palm Beach | Villa 900 | Main roof loaded by telehandler; the disconnected rear section was hand-carried |
| Okeechobee to Jupiter | Saxony 900 Split Slate | Pallets lifted to the roof, then split into bundles across the planes |
| Pompano Beach to Jupiter | Saxony 900, Slate Black Antique | Field, trim and ridge pieces staged around valleys and vents |
| Okeechobee to North Palm Beach | Madera 900 | Steep, multi-plane roof; lift timing coordinated with the crew receiving each load |
| Okeechobee to Delray Beach | Estate | Bundles staged in working rows across multiple roof planes |
What does the roof need before tile is loaded?
The FRSA-TRI Florida High Wind tile manual (7th edition, effective 31 December 2023) sets three handling rules that shape every loading plan: distribute stacks of tile uniformly, not in concentrated loads; install temporary battens to help roof loading when conditions warrant; and protect the underlayment during loading and stacking. It also tells the job to make other trades aware while materials are being loaded.
Before MMJ dispatches the telehandler, the request should confirm:
- The roof is ready to receive tile, and the date and time it will be.
- Roof height, layout and the zones where the crew wants tile placed.
- Tile product, quantity and pallet information.
- A stable setup area and a clear path for the equipment.
- Overhead, landscaping, traffic or timing restrictions.
- The on-site contact who directs placement.
How much weight does each square put on the roof?
The five Westlake profiles in MMJ's projects install at 8.79 to 10.3 lb per square foot in the July 2026 QAI listing, so every square the telehandler lifts is roughly 880 to 1,030 lb of tile. The weight per square table breaks that down by profile.
Can MMJ load tile that another company delivered?
Yes. Loading-only requests are reviewed when the incoming delivery time, material position and quantity, equipment access, roof readiness and placement instructions are coordinated. MMJ can also pick up and deliver the tile so one company runs the job from the plant to the roof.
More questions crews ask
Is roof loading the same as roof installation?
No. MMJ raises and places the tile on the roof under the confirmed loading plan. The roofing contractor prepares the roof and installs the tile.
Will the telehandler damage a paver driveway?
MMJ lays plywood along the approved equipment path to help protect paver surfaces when the site calls for it, and five of the six published jobs record it. Gate authorization, permitted work hours and the protection plan are confirmed before the job is scheduled.
Who spreads the tile once it is on the roof?
Placement into the contractor-directed zones is part of MMJ's loading scope. On the published jobs the tile was separated into bundles and working rows across the roof planes and around valleys, vents and ridges, ready for the installation crew.
Can every jobsite be roof loaded?
No. MMJ reviews access, authorized staging, stable setup ground, overhead clearance, roof readiness, tile quantity and the contractor-directed placement plan before confirming rooftop loading.
Does MMJ work on jobs that need a crane?
MMJ reviews projects where crane-assisted handling is part of the proposed loading plan. Crane availability, responsibilities, access, timing and the approved scope are coordinated before the job is confirmed.
